Credit counseling is a new requirement Congress enacted in 2005 during its perceived need for bankruptcy reform.  The certificate is required before we can file your case.

After your case is filed, you will go through this same online process again -- only the second time it is called "Debtor Education" and not "Credit Counseling."  Again, it takes about an hour or less.  This second certificate is necessary for the court to grant you a discharge of your debts.

It is important to get the second bankruptcy class completed quickly after filing.  If the bankruptcy court closes your case without a discharge, you will have no further protection from creditors.  You then must pay a filing fee of $255 to have the case re-opened soley for the purposes of filing your education certificate.
